This year, FYO will have four distinct levels of orchestras. All returning students will be evaluated by Ms. Caren. Each evaluation will last approximately 4 minutes and will consist of a scale, an excerpt and a sight reading component.
Listed below are the evaluation materials for the three levels other than beginners. Please pick a level that you would like to be evaluated for and prepare that material by practicing it over and over. The B material is less complex than C, and C is less complex than D. It is best to choose the difficulty of material based on what you can prepare well. It makes much more sense to pick an easier level and do a very good job playing it, than to pick a more difficult level and not sound as good for your evaluation.
Please keep in mind the evaluation process is only one factor in determining a student’s placement in our program. Placement is also determined by where each level’s skills are and how student numbers fall within those levels. The FYO reserves the right to assign a student to a group other than the one a student is being evaluated for.
Ms. Caren wants all the children to understand that they shouldn’t worry about being evaluated. She wants to see and hear each student play their instrument so she can design a program for the FYO that will help every student become a fine player. Everyone should do their best for their evaluation and that will be good enough!
